The Book of Shadows (or Grimoire) is a magical reference book and will be highly individual to you. It can take many forms and what is included can vary greatly. You decide what goes into yours. You should make sure that what goes into it is useful to you.

Many witches use a Book of Shadows, but you don't have to be witch to have one. Yours could be as simple as a diary or record of your journey to achievement. It is nice to attach to it a mystical special quality. You could do this by creating it from a special notebook with an elaborately decorated cover. However, you can choose to use a simple notebook.

For many, a Book of Shadows becomes a record of their journey to achieving goals in their life. It begins with the goals themselves, and then charts the journey to achievement, listing and recording the information and resources needed to help them achieve their desires.

It becomes a source of reference and the knowledge you accumulate along the path you have chosen. It is important that your Book of Shadows is also a measure and gauge of your success. As you begin to create your Book of Shadows, you will see almost immediate progress on your quest for your goals, and you must be able to recognise this straight away.

It is best hand written, but will also include some printed documents, typed documents, and pictures. From the outset it is important to number each page and create an index, otherwise as your Book grows, important information may become hidden and neglected.

* Your Spiritual Journal
* Spells and Outcomes
* Calendar of Moon Phases
* References
* Spiritual and Magical Research and Resources
* A Record of Dreams

Often the following are kept in a Book of Shadows

* A protection spell
* A blessing
* Table of Contents
* Glossary of terms
* Pagan or Personal Traditions and Ethics (eg Witches Creed)
* Information on Herb Lore
* Recipes for Cake, Ale, Oils and Incense
* Research in Astrology, Magical Symbolism and Alphabets
* Dream interpretation
* Lists of Books and Sacred Texts
* Divination studies (Runes, Scrying, Tarot etc)
* Index

You will find many resources to help you create and maintain your Book of Shadows, in books and articles especially. Most important though is your individuality. You decide what you need to enter into your Book of Shadows, and you need pay no attention to others in this respect.
